Defense Leads Way in First Scrimmage

Murray State put on full pads for the first time Wednesday morning as the team held their first scrimmage of the preseason. The scrimmage was just over 60 plays. The scrimmage is also the first step in setting the depth chart for the season opener.
"We had a pretty good idea going into today and I am sure after we watch the film that there will be a few guys who move up, and a few guys who move down," said head coach Chris Hatcher. "The big thing is we start limiting who we think is going to be on the special teams."
The defense began the scrimmage by forcing a three-and-out. The offense was able to move the ball on their next two possessions, but were unable to reach the endzone. KD Humphries hit Zach Shipley on three-straight plays to pick up the first first down of the day. He also hit Kendarian Jennings on a big pickup before a pair of incompletions put an end to the drive. Â
The fourth drive of the day belonged to the defense as a tipped ball at the line was followed by back-to-back sacks from St. Pierre Anilus and Felton Collins. Â
The offense finally got on the board with a six-play scoring drive that was led by CJ Bennett. Running back Roman Clay did the bulk of the damage as he gained 40 yards on a pair of carries. Bennett then did it himself as he kept the ball around right end and scored from 10-yards out.
The touchdown seemed to spark the offense as they followed it up with a drive into the red zone. Unfortunately, a ball was dropped in the endzone, and two plays later, Travis Taylor ended the threat with an interception in the endzone.
The scrimmage did end on a positive note for the offense as Bennett hit freshman Jordon Gandy on a 24-yard touchdown on the final play.
The Racers will practice in helmets Thursday morning at 8 a.m. They will practice in shells on Friday and Saturday before taking Sunday off. Their next scheduled scrimmage will be Aug. 12 at 8 a.m.
