Racers Fall In Season Finale at JSU
11/21/2015 7:05:00 PM | Football
The Murray State football team ended its season with a 42-20 loss at top-ranked Jacksonville State Saturday at Burgess-Snow Field.
The Turning Point
After both teams lost a fumble in their first two possessions, the Racers answered Jacksonville State's first touchdown with a 27-yard field goal by Connor Mitchell to keep it close at 7-3 midway through the first quarter. However, the Gamecocks would go to add another touchdown in the first and one at the start of the second to surge to a 21-3 lead.
Trailing 21-6 in the third quarter, Murray State looked poised for a comeback after a Landon Stratton punt pinned the Gamecocks at the six-yard line. On the first play of the ensuing drive, JSU's Eli Jenkins fumbled the ball at the three, which was then picked up by Murray State's Demetrius Mason at the one, who then ran it in for a touchdown to close the gap at 21-13. The Gamecocks, however, quickly quelled any uprising by marching 82 yards down the field and capping the drive with a 24 yard rushing touchdown by Jenkins, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Racers.
About The Gamecocks
Quarterback Eli Jenkins was a one-man show for JSU on Saturday, accounting for five touchdowns on the day. The junior was 15-for-30 for 212 yards and two scores through the air, in addition to racking up 130 yards and three touchdowns on the yard.
A Record Breaking Day
With 286 yards on Saturday, KD Humphries broke Casey Brockman's 2012 single-season passing record of 3,729 yards, finishing the season with 3,778. He also set the single-season for attempts with 532, surpassing Casey Brockman's 2012 season total of 517 for that record as well.
Saving The Best For Last
Demetrius Mason recovered the fourth fumble of his career Saturday, in his last game as a Racer. However, what he did next made the moment memorable, as he scooped the ball up at the one and ran it into the end zone for the first touchdown of his career.
