2014 Recap
Murray State went 23-29 overall and 14-16 in the OVC in its final season as the Thoroughbreds. Pitcher Brock Downey was selected as the OVC Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2014 as he compiled a record of 9-3 with a 2.76 ERA. He struck-out 74 batters and walked just 25 in a school-record 107.2 innings. He became the 10th pitcher in Racers history to win at least nine games in a season, and the first since Daniel Calhoun (11) and Chris Craycraft (10) in 2009.
Downey was joined on the All-OVC team by Anthony Bayus, who was a first team selection, while Tyler Lawrence was selected to the All-Freshman Team. Bayus led the Racers offense by hitting .327 with 15 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 31 RBIs. He was tied for the team lead with 65 hits, while ranking second on the squad with 37 runs scored.
Lawrence was one of just three players to start every game in 2014. He made 29 starts at catcher and 23 as the DH. Lawrence hit .313 with 11 doubles, one triple, a home run and led the team with 36 RBIs.
Scouting Southern Mississippi
The Golden Eagles are led by sixth-year Head Coach Scott Berry who has compiled a record of 172-119 while at USM. Southern Miss went 35-25 overall last season and 19-11 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles return a pair of All-Conference USA performers from 2014 in designated hitter Matt Durst and outfielder Dylan Burdeaux.
Durst, who was named to the second team, led USM in hitting .282 on the season to go along with a team-high six home runs and 40 RBIs. Burdeaux, who was named to the All-Freshman Team, posted a .256 batting averaging with three homers and 19 RBI.
