This Week
The Murray State baseball team travels to Emerson, Ga., to play a four-game series against IPFW. The series was originally to be played Feb. 20-22 at Reagan Field in Murray but due to the recent weather, the series was moved to Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders played each day. MSU's home opener against Harris Stowe scheduled for Feb. 17 was postponed.
Last Week
The Racers opened the 2015 season with three losses at Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg last weekend. Murray State lost game one 7-4, game two 10-3 and had its rally fall short in game three in a 6-5 defeat to close the series.
Yoder Leads Offense
Outfielder Derek Yoder led the Racers against USM with a .417 batting average (minimum five at-bats). Yoder collected a hit in all three games and had two-hit games in the final two contests.
Trio Boosts Bullpen
Tyler Anderson, Brandon Hicks and John Lollar all had solid outings out of the bullpen last week for the Racers. Anderson pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit in game three against USM. Hicks went 3.2 innings in game one, and allowed no runs on three hits and had a strikeout. Lollar pitched a career-high three innings in game three against the Golden Eagles, and allowed just one run and two hits to go along with a strikeout.
Lawrence Goes Long
Catcher Tyler Lawrence tied his home run total from 2014 in his very first at-bat of the season as he went deep to left center field in the top of the first inning in the Racers' contest against Southern Miss. Lawrence also had a double in game three and is tied for the team lead with two extra-base hits.
Scouting IPFW
The Mastodons enter the weekend series with a 3-1 mark overall, having taken 3-of-4 from Alabama A&M. IPFW is led by Shane Trevino's .538 batting average. Trevino, Evan VanSumeren and Kendall Whitman each lead the team with five RBIs apiece. Trevino was named the Summit League's Player of the Week for his performance last week.
Evan Miller had the best start in the series for IPFW. Miller went 4.2 innings and allowed just three hits as he shutout Alabama A&M. Zac Mishler, Trevor Storie and Ryan Wells also made starts for the Mastodons in the series. IPFW doesn't run a lot, having stolen just two bases on three attempts in the four games. The Mastodons had 16 extra-base hits (10 doubles, three triples, three home runs) against A&M. IPFW is led by sixth-year Head Coach Bobby Pierce.
