SIU Edwardsville hit five two-run home runs to power to an 11-4 victory over Murray State Monday in the series finale of the two's three-game set in Edwardsville.
For the second game in a row, the Racers (6-14, 2-4 OVC) got on the board first, this time, on a solo home run down the left field line from Matt McGowan in the third. It was McGowan's first homer of the season. The Cougars (6-9, 6-0 OVC) didn't waste much time responding however, as they hit a pair of two-run homers over the left field fence in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth, a Derek Yoder single up the middle cut the deficit to 4-2 as he brought home Anthony Bayus. In the fifth, another homer from SIUE pushed the lead back out to 6-2. It was 6-3 on the Racers' second long ball of the day as Bayus homered to center, his first of the season. After the two team's traded runs in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, SIUE busted the game open with a blast in both the seventh and eighth innings to push the lead to 11-4.
Bayus, McGowan and Yoder all collected a pair of hits in the loss for MSU while both Bayus and McGowan came around to score twice. Tyler Lawrence also recorded an RBI in the contest for the Racers.
John Lollar picked-up the loss in the game for Murray State, dropping him to 1-2 on the season. Lollar allowed four runs in 2.1 innings of work. Cody Maerz, John Rafferty and Cameron Wallace all pitched relief in the game for the Racers.
MSU returns to action Wednesday as it travels to Evansville for a midweek game with the Purple Aces beginning at 6 p.m. The Racers open at Reagan Field this weekend in a three-game series with Austin Peay beginning Friday.
