MSU begins OVC play this weekend as UT Martin comes to town for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
Last Week
The Racers lost 2-of-3 to Dayton last weekend down in Emerson, Ga. MSU won game one 8-2 and lost games two and three 3-1 and 6-2, respectively. Brock Downey picked up the win over UD last week. Downey pitched 7.1 shutout innings while allowing just one hit and recording 11 strikeouts.
Downey Named ADIDAS OVC Pitcher of the Week
For his efforts against the Flyers, Downey earned OVC Pitcher of the Week honors. Downey had a no-hitter going into the eighth inning Friday and the only hit he surrendered was a bleeder that hit right in front of the plate and weakly rolled down the foul line in fair territory. Downey's 11 strikeouts was a season-high and the second time in his career he's had double-digit punch-outs.
Lawrence Leads Offense
Catcher Tyler Lawrence leads the Racers in multiple offensive categories this season, including, batting average (.294), hits (10), extra-base hits (5), home runs (2) and RBIs (8). Lawrence is also one of five Racers to have started in all 10 games.
Scouting Kentucky
The Wildcats enter the midweek contest having won five consecutive games. UK has been an offensive power so far this season with four starters hitting .333 or better on the season and is led by Ka'ai Tom who is hitting .472. Kyle Barrett is also hitting above .400 at .429. Thomas Bernal leads the squad with 12 RBIs. Storm Wilson leads the UK running game as he is 5-of-6 on steal attempts in 2015 and leads the team with 11 runs scored.
Dustin Beggs leads the Wildcats with a 2.08 ERA this season and is 1-1 overall. Andrew Nelson leads the team with two wins on the year, while Spencer Jack has the Wildcats' lone save. Kentucky is led by Head Coach Gary Henderson who is in his seventh season as the head coach at UK and 12th season overall at the school.
