Spring Football: The First Scrimmage

After the second week of spring practice, the Murray State football team hosted its first scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray. This was the first taste of the 2015 season for players, coaches and fans alike. Coaches and student-athletes got to experience working together in a game-like scenario, as well as finding the strengths in their positions.
The offense meshed well together Saturday, having a total of four touchdown passes and multiple long-distance passes. In just over a week, the unit already seems to have a grasp on the offensive scheme.
Senior wide receiver Paul Rice said following the game, "I like where we are going, we are in the process right now. The key is this summer and how we prepare them." Rice had a great day Saturday, making several receptions and even threw a touchdown pass.Â
Junior KD Humphries started in 10 games and played in 12 last season for the Racers at quarterback, while Zeke Pike transferred to Murray State after playing at both Auburn and Louisville. Both quarterbacks featured in Saturday's scrimmage for Murray State and both had a pair of touchdown passes.
Linebacker Tyler Stepney was quick to aid the defense while he was on the field and was helpful in bringing down some of the bigger offensive players. Stepney also felt positive about the scrimmage afterwards and said, "The scrimmage today was good. We got into real game situations and were able to overcome adversities together." "Once we all settled down and got locked in, I believe the defense became very effective."
The defense as a whole had many plays that disrupted the offense's movement down the field. Sophomore defensive back Dylan Boone had multiple crucial tackles in Saturday's scrimmage, helping set the tone for the rest of the defense. "This [scrimmage] is a jumpstart for the fall," Boone said. "We are all just trying to understand the defense and Coach Hicks had put us in a lot of good positions."
At the conclusion of practice, the teams gathered around to cheer on the senior kickers Carson Greifenkamp and Connor Mitchell in a field goal completion competition, where Mitchell walked away victorious.
