Spring Football: The Second Scrimmage
4/21/2015 9:21:00 AM | Football
With less than one week away from the "Fastest Friday in Kentucky," the Murray State Football team conducted its second scrimmage last Saturday. The Racers had a different outcome than the last scrimmage as the defense dominated, leaving head coach Mitch Stewart very impressed.
"The biggest thing over the whole spring ball period has just been our physicality," Stewart began. "We wanted to improve physically. We wanted to get a lot tougher, we wanted to put our kids in a lot of bad situations, defensively and offensively, and see how they respond."
The team has gone through back-to back practices in pads and squeezed a lot of football into a short amount of time. With a placed emphasis physicality and toughness, that approach appears to have paid off.
"You want to see your defense out there being physical," Stewart continued. "Obviously I wanted to see the offense be more productive, but I'm not mad at all about how the scrimmage ended."
The offense still managed to have many successful plays despite only playing back-up quarterbacks. "We didn't let KD Humphries play at all today," Stewart started. "We played nothing but the backup quarterbacks. We let them get some pop, so there's a lot of good teaching tape to work off of".
Junior linebacker Jonathan Jackson, who started 11 games last season, was excited about the scrimmage."Coming out before the scrimmage today, Coach just wanted us to let it all out and fly around," Jackson said. "We know what we need to do, our responsibilities and everything. The main thing was to go out and have fun and I think we did that."
Stewart loved the way that the defense covered the field and made some hits. He made note of how the defense was more physical than the offense and how the defense was a little bit more ready to play. As spring football is winds down, the team continues to work together to push each other to the best of their abilities. Practices continue to be extremely competitive and done with an intensity that impresses the coaching staff.
"There isn't just one guy in particular who leads the team," Jackson stated. "That's the good thing about our defense, there isn't just one guy who is going to come in and set the tone."When asked about leaders on the team, Stewart could not pick only one. He mentioned how vital Demetrius Mason, Hunter Kingston and Corey Gammon were to the line and that he was excited about freshman Chris White.
"We are pretty solid in the linebacker position." Stewart added, "All of those guys they do a really good job for us so I don't know if there's a true leader right there, but they are just a good group,"
Stewart also noted that the offense has some veteran leaders to help carry the team.
"Obviously offensively we got KD," Stewart continued. "And then out wide we have got a couple of guys like Jeremy Harness, Janawski Davis, and Jesse Blackburn that have made some plays in the past and they are the ones we are going to lean on offensively."
The scrimmage ended with Carson Griefenkamp winning the kick off competition over Connor Mitchell. "Come out and see us Friday April 24th, we start at about 5 o'clock," Stewart ended. "We have a lot of things we are doing beforehand. Everybody is going to be down on the field. So they are going to get a chance to hear and see everything."
