Spring Football: The Quarterbacks
4/23/2015 3:02:00 PM | Football
As Murray State Football wraps up spring practice, the quarterbacks are the focus of the last feature on GoRacers.com. Leading the quarterbacks this season will be a face that is familiar to many Racer fans, as Casey Brockman returns home.
"It feels good," Brockman said. "I'm happy and excited to be back. I'm ready for the fall, to get the reason I came back underway."
Brockman finished his four-season career with MSU with 9,990 passing yards and roughly a 70-percent completion rate. He currently holds the records for game, season, and career in passing yards, attempts, completions, and touchdowns.
"The good thing is I can tell them I've done this before." Brockman continued, "I've been in their shoes and I know the everyday battles being that guy that everyone looks to. So it's good to have that credibility already when you walk into the room and try to tell them what to do."
This spring's roster holds four quarterbacks with redshirt junior KD Humphries leading the way. Humphries played in all 12 games last season and recorded 3,488 passing yards. The three other quarterbacks include Zeke Pike, Houston Hartz and Hayden Sphire. Brockman added that all of quarterbacks are taking control of the offense.
"Everyone is taking on some type of leadership role," Humphries adds. "Whether it's in actions or words, everyone is taking on a leadership role."
After completing spring practices, Humphries is comfortable with the offense. He feels like they are doing their part for the MSU football program and are pushing each other as a team.
"We are just coming out every day and working harder than we did last time, not being complacent and trying to score every time we get the ball," Humphries said. "Our defensive coaches are drawing up good plays and making us better. Every day we are trying to get better."
Brockman added that although the quarterbacks have a long way to go, they have put in a lot of good work this spring. He feels that overall the spring was a very successful time for his unit.
Humphries ended by giving what he feel two of the team's main objectives are. "We just want to come out here, have fun and give the student body and city of Murray something to be proud of, the new Racers under Coach Stewart."
