Murray State football has finished spring practices, the only thing left is the spring football game known as "The Fastest Friday in Kentucky". The game will take place at 5 p.m. at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, but fans should arrive early as the team has many activities planned for before the game.
Â
The spring game is where students and fans can come watch what the football team has been working on since head coach Mitch Stewart took the helm this winter.
Â
The spring game is not all Stewart has done to put his name and the MSU football team on everyone's mind. On Wednesday, he was at the dunk tank for one of the fraternities. Stewart believes getting involved himself will help get his team involved in student life and students involved in athletics.
Â
"I don't want our kids to just come over here for football and go to class and that's it" Stewart stated. "I want them to be a contributor to student life and contributor to social settings and have the total college experience. I feel like if they see me do that, they will be more prone to going out and being with the students and in turn I hope that means the students come support us."
Â
The name "Fastest Friday" was given by Stewart to get students involved. Friday will begin with tailgating at 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. will be the "Fastest Friday in Kentucky Greek Games", which will include 10 Minute-To-Win-It games.
Â
"It's some fun games and what we've done is we're going to partner up a fraternity and a sorority and we will have six-teams and trophies" Stewart said. "It's a wooden trophy with a helmet on it and we've got one for a sorority and one for a fraternity and whichever wins can take it home and hopefully they bring it back next year and we add a plaque and this keeps going from year-to-year."
Â
Following the Greek games, at 5 p.m., the Murray State community will get its first glimpse at the new Racer football team. Along with the scrimmage, Stewart is adding an extra piece to the game.
Â
"I'm going to incorporate flag football to my spring game," Stewart added. "My offense will have a flag football defense and my defense will have a flag football offense and that's how we will keep score."
Â
Football began spring practices on April 1 and it all comes down to the spring game to get the team prepared for the fall, where they look to capture an Ohio Valley Conference Championship.
