MSU Takes Aim At OVC Men's Golf Championship

The Murray State Men's golf team heads to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship looking for their first win since 2010 when the 54-hole event gets underway Friday.

The OVC men's event will be played April 24-26, in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at The Shoals GC, another great layout in the Robert Trent Jones Golf trail.

Senior Jordan Smith leads the Racers into the OVC Championship with the ninth scoring average in the league of 72.8. MSU also lines up Duncan McCormick (74.8), Brock Simmons (75.2), Jared Gosser (75.6) and Preston French (76.0).

MSU's first tee time Friday is 8:50 a.m. with French leading off, followed by Gosser, Simmons, McCormick and Smith. The Racers are paired with Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech.

MSU has won four championships all-time since the first OVC event was played in 1949. MSU posted wins in 1971, 1987, 1991 and then in 2010 under Head Coach Eddie Hunt who is in his 14th season at the helm of MSU Golf.

Individually, the Racers have produced some of the greatest players in OVC History. From 2010-13, the Racers had four straight medalist winners including Patrick Newcomb twice and one each from Cameron Carrico and Nick Newcomb. Other MSU medalists include: Billy Graham (1962 & 1963), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Pigott (1971), Chris Carlson (1987) and Brandon Henson (2001).

The OVC will play the Fighting Joe course, named after General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was the first Trail course to break 8,000 yards. Travel + Leisure Golf named Fighting Joe one of the top new courses in 2004. The OVC men will play the par-72 course at 7,258 yards. The OVC Men's Championship has been held at The Shoals twice previously (2009 and 2014).

After Friday's first round, the OVC squads gather for the awards banquet when the annual OVC honors will be announced.
