Spring Football: Fastest Friday In Kentucky

The Murray State football team concluded its spring season with the first 'Fastest Friday in Kentucky' on Friday at Stewart Stadium in Murray. The afternoon was packed with activities for the community and the Greek organizations at Murray State.
Head coach Mitch Stewart was overall pleased with the event, not only with the play from the team but from the support of the fans, as well. He wanted the players to be focused and compete, yet wanted them be involved with the crowd and have fun. He believes on Friday, that his team accomplished just that.
The day started in the Racer Room under the stadium for the Fastest Friday Greek games. These were games based off the "Minute to Win It" television program and included shaking to get all the plastic golf balls out of a tissue box tied around ones waist, swinging a banana to hit an orange down a line and many others.
Trophies were presented to the sorority and fraternity that finished with the most points and were declared champions of the Fastest Friday in Kentucky games. The winning sorority was Alpha Gamma Delta, while the winning fraternity was Pi Kappa Alpha.
After the games concluded, the Greeks and the football team moved out onto the field to prepare for the scrimmage and flag football game. The Greek organizations were divided and teamed with either the offense or the defense. The Racer defense was teamed up with sororities and fraternities as their offense while the Racer offense was teamed with sororities and fraternities as their defense. The MSU football team would play until the offense scored or had a turnover on downs, then the Greeks would come out for flag football for their chance to score for the Racer defense.
The defense, led by first-year coordinator Chris Boone, won the day and impressed the fans with its physicality. "I thought they did a good job today." Boone continued, "This was mostly for the experience. We got a lot of work in front of us, but we are looking forward to it."
The defense has worked all spring on gaining physicality and overall toughness. In the past two scrimmages, the defense has showcased all of its hard work and dedication. "This is two scrimmages in a row when they've done really well, and it is really good to see that." Stewart added, "There is a lot of enthusiasm on the defensive side of the ball".
Defensively, Cedric Jones and Butler Community College transfer Collin Frickey were credited with sacks and the defense as a whole had six stops.
Not only did the defense shine, the offense had a great day as well. All four quarterbacks got playing time today with a roughly 60-percent pass completion rate as a unit. Junior KD Humphries led the way by going 6-for-9 with a touchdown pass to Janawski Davis, while sophomore Hayden Sphire was 4-for-6. Senior kicker Connor Mitchell also scored for the offense, connecting on a 42-yard field goal attempt. "I thought they moved at a good pace," added Stewart about the offense. "I thought their tempo was really good. It was very encouraging to see that".
The game finished with a field goal competition between seniors Carson Griefenkamp and Connor Mitchell with each kicking from the 27, 32, 37, 42 and 47-yard lines. Mitchell won the contest by going 4-for-5, missing only the 47-yard attempts, while Greifenkamp was 3-for-5.
"I just want to say thank you to everyone who came out. It means a lot to our kids" Stewart ended. "But to have this many people show up for the first time we did this was unbelievable. I just want to say big thank you to Racer Nation."
