Racers Drop High-Scoring Affair
4/25/2015 6:59:00 PM | Baseball
After scoring an unearned run in the third, the Racers (14-30, 9-11 OVC) were able to cut into their 12-1 deficit with a three-run fourth inning. Matt McGowan hit a big two-run home run to left field to open the scoring in the inning for MSU while Tyler Lawrence hit an RBI double to right to score Anthony Bayus two batters later.
After the Redhawks scored two more runs in the sixth, MSU got five runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 14-9. McGowan recorded his third RBI of the game with a single to center that scored Pokey Harris. Lawrence followed that up with an RBI through the left side to bring home McGowan later that inning. A Nick Moore two-run double scored Lawrence and Derek Yoder two batters later and a Clay Kelly RBI single wrapped up the scoring for the Racers in the inning.
SEMO would respond though with a three-run seventh inning to lengthen its lead back to eight runs at 17-9. The Racers were able to get those three runs back in the ninth when Matthew Johnson reached on an error, scoring Dalton West and Rick Linton and on a Moore RBI single up the gut.
Lawrence, McGowan, Moore and Yoder were responsible for eight of the Racers' nine hits in the loss. Both McGowan and Yoder went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the game while Moore was 2-for-6. Lawrence went 2-for-2 with a run and three walks. For the series Lawrence is 4-for-5 with five walks. Lawrence's two RBIs gave him his eighth mutli-RBI game of the season. McGowan's three RBIs tie a career-high for him while Moore collected three ribbies or more for the third time this season.
Brock Downey took the loss in the game while Cameron Wallace, Tanner Edge and John Rafferty all made relief appearances for the Racers. Rafferty was the most effective out of the bullpen, allowing two hits and no runs over two innings of work along with a strikeout.
The series finale between the Racers and Redhawks is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Johnny Reagan Field.
