Spring Football: The D-Line

Murray State's football team began spring practices Apr. 1 to prepare for the 2015 season. An integral part of the football team is the defensive line. The unit is led by assistant head coach Santos Carrillo, who is in his second season working with the defensive front.

Zach Dean is a senior, defensive end from Salem, Alabama who appeared in all 12 games, while starting 11 during the 2014 season. He racked up a total of 52 tackles including 5.5 tackles-for-loss and recorded 1.5 sacks and one fumble recovery.Â

The Racers are in the second week of spring football, with Tuesday being in full pads.

"They are clearly drained" said Carrillo, "but it's only going to get better".
Â
"I feel good," Dean said, "I feel like we got a little bit to work on getting in shape-wise because we looked a little sluggish."
Â
There are many returners to the D-line for the 2015 season, but that doesn't mean it gets any easier.
Â
"The guys we had last year are the gist of what we have this year and they are doing well," Carrillo said. "But it's a whole different system, so that is good that we have those guys because we are low in numbers and that's what's hurting us right now."

Dean said, "I'm glad we still have some of the same players because we know we are going to fight for each other, but we have a new coach and new plays and we have to learn and overcome that so we are all on the same page."

Carrillo sees Dean as one of the leaders on the D-line, while Dean believes everyone tries to pull their own weight.

"I'm glad he [Coach Carrillo] sees me as a leader because I come out every day better and try to push the rest of the team" Dean said.
Â
Looking forward to the rest of the spring and into the fall season, Carrillo said, "I'm just excited about this year and I'm really looking forward to seeing these guys flourish. By the end of the spring I think we are going to be a really good team."

"Just come out and watch the D-line, because we're going to take the game over "said Dean.
