The Murray State softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to in-state foe Western Kentucky on Wednesday night, 5-1 and 6-5, at the WKU Softball Complex in Bowling Green.
Game one was controlled by WKU (22-5) from the get-go with 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year finalist Miranda Kramer striking out the first six Racers she faced. Murray State (22-14) was able to muster just three hits off of Kramer, including a seventh inning home run from Cayla Levins, but it was not enough, as the Racers fell 5-1.
Levins, along with Zierke and Miller, were the only Racers to hit Kramer in the contest, who ended the day with 15 strikeouts. CheyAnne Gaskey (11-7) took the loss for MSU, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Game two seemed to be a different story as Murray State manufactured three runs in the first, to take the early lead. However, the Lady Toppers answered in the second with two runs of their own to cut the lead to one.
Jocelynn Rodger re-cushioned the lead for MSU in the fifth with a two-run blast to extend the lead to 5-2. In the sixth, Larissa Franklin took advantage of a Racer error on a Dani Pugh hit to trim the lead to 5-3
However, in the bottom of the seventh; it all fell apart for Murray State. The Racers found themselves in a bases loaded jam with just one out after allowing two singles and a walk to start the frame. Brooke Holloway pulled her team within one, at 5-4, with a RBI single and was followed by Franklin who sent one out to centerfield allowing two runs to cross the plate for the come-from-behind, walk-off win.
Miller was 3-for-4 in the contest with a RBI, while Mo Ramsey and Maggie Glass were 1-for-2 with a run and two walks each. Mason Robin (10-4) took the loss, as she gave up six runs, five earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Racers will return to OVC action this weekend when they host Southeast Missouri for a three-game series. Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
