Spring Football: The Linebackers

As we continue to look into the Murray State football defense, the linebackers get their time to shine. The linebackers are lead by coach Brandon Cooper who is in his first season at Murray State.
The Racers are in the second week of spring football and their second day in full pads.
"I feel good," said Cooper. "I think for us it's a good learning process. My main thing for my guys is intensity and effort. Assignment wise you're going to have some errors, you're going to have some guys that make mistakes but you want to know how hard are they playing and how hard are they practicing"
"It feels great to be out here with the people who you worked hard this offseason with" said St. Pierre Anilus.
With his it being his first year at MSU, Cooper talked about transitioning the group of returners for the team. "I don't think transitions are very easy. My main thing is it usually takes 21 days to break a habit, so we won't be anywhere near perfect, yet" said Cooper.
Anilus is a senior linebacker from Key West, Florida. He recorded 41 total tackles last season, including 18 against Southeast Missouri; which was one shy of the Murray State record.
"We have a lot of people coming back for linebackers," said Anilus. "Our position is deep. But everything is starting to glue together. Coach is making sure we are studying the playbook hard."
In addition to returning Anilus, the linebacker corps will also have the benefit of the services of Jonathan Jackson. The junior led MSU last season with 138 tackles and finished first in the OVC in tackles per game with 12.2 and fourth in all of the FCS.
"He's what I call a football player and a good football player," added Cooper. "He's the guy we're trying to model ourselves after. He has a lot of work to still go but I think his intensity and effort is what helps him the most." Cooper also added, "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to starting a winning tradition and get us going in the right direction."
