Baseball Opens Series With Loss at Morehead State

The Murray State baseball team opened its final series of 2015 with a 9-4 loss to Morehead State Thursday on the road. The Eagles scored seven of their nine runs in the first three innings of the game.

Matt McGowan led the Racer offense in the loss. McGowan went 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Kipp Moore went 1-for-3 with a run in the loss. MSU (15-39, 10-18 OVC) collected seven hits as a team, while the Eagles (34-19, 19-9 OVC) pounded-out 14 hits.

Morehead opened the game with a four-run bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead that it wouldn't look back from. A Dalton West RBI single in the top of the second brought home Moore for the first MSU run of the game. In the third, the Racers cut it to 4-2 on a Brock Downey sacrifice fly that scored McGowan from third. However, Morehead State would quickly lengthen its lead in the bottom of the inning with three runs to make it 7-2.

A two-run eighth inning extended the Racer deficit to 9-2. The Racers would score two runs in the top of the ninth. The first came on McGowan's second double of the day, scoring Tyler Hardin. A Derek Yoder groundout in the next at-bat scored Rick Linton from third to make it 9-4.

Tyler Lawrence extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games in the loss. Lawrence went 1-for-4 on the day with a double. Cashtyn DeLeeuw made his second start of the season against the Eagles and took the loss.

Game two of the series will be played Friday. First pitch has been moved up to a 1 p.m. central time start due to incoming rain in the forecast.
