SAAC Awards Night - Racers' Best Of the Best

Awards for the 2014-15 school year by Murray State Athletics were handed out Monday (May 4) by the MSU Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) at the Curris Center in Murray, Ky.
The annual awards honor the Racers' best of the best.
Voted on by Racer student athletes (which number more than 300), the awards serve as an ultimate compliment and recognition from peers.
With some of the spring sports still to have their Ohio Valley Conference championships, the Racers have won three OVC regular season titles (volleyball, men's basketball & women's tennis) and two OVC tournament championships (volleyball & women's tennis). The Racers have produced three OVC coaches of the year (Steve Prohm, Dave Schwepker and Alan Lollar). Additionally there were three OVC Player of the Year winners (Scottie Ingram, Ben Estes & Cameron Payne). Nancy Karaky (women's tennis), Ivan Roe (rifle) and Ke'Shunan James (women's basketball) were OVC Freshmen of the Year winners.
Awards were also given for teams and individuals involving academics, community service and sport performance. Here is a complete rundown of the awards.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE AWARDS
Female Newcomer of the Year - Shelby Haworth (soccer)
Haworth was a three-time OVC Goalkeeper of the Week as a freshman and was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team. She finished the season with a 1.22 goals against average and 93 saves.
Nominees - Moa Folke (women's golf), Ke'Shunan James (women's basketball), Valleri Korir (track & field),
Male Newcomer of the Year - Ben Estes (rifle)
Ben was named First-Team All-America for smallbore by the National Rifle Association. He was the OVC Smallbore Athlete of the Year and finished his freshman season with a 580.8 average (possible 600).
Nominees - Brad Boegel (baseball), Justin Seymour (men's basketball),
Female Student-Athlete of the Year - Scottie Ingram (volleyball)
Scottie was the OVC Player of the Year after leading OVC with 4.57 kills per set in conference play. She had 13 double-doubles and led the team with 370 kills.
Nominees - Andrea Eskauriatza (women's tennis), Julie Mooney (soccer), Jessica Twaddle (softball)
Male Student-Athlete of the Year - Cameron Payne (men's basketball)
Cameron just finished up two fantastic seasons for the Racers and is now getting ready for the NBA Draft. This past season, Cam was the fourth player in MSU history to score 700 points in a single season and the second MSU player to have 200 assists. He leaves MSU as the second fastest to reach 1,000 points. He did it in 57 games. The postseason awards he won included: OVC Player of Year, Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention,
CBS All-America Third Team, Lute Olson Player of the Year & Naismith Trophy Semifinalist.

Coach of the Year - Dave Schwepker (volleyball)
Dave was named OVC Coach of the Year after the Racers won their first OVC regular season title (14-2) and went 23-5 overall. The Racers hosted and won the OVC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they played at Illinois.

INDIVIDUAL ACADEMIC AWARDS
Four Years/Two Goals - The goal of Murray State Athletics is for each student to leave with a diploma in one hand and an OVC championship ring on the other. These are student athletes that are graduating from Murray State and won an OVC championship during their time at MSU.
