The Murray State softball team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2015 OVC Softball Tournament Thursday with a 5-4, come-from-behind win over Jacksonville State at Cougar Field in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Alexa Becker got Murray State (38-17) off to a hot start in the first, when she singled to lead off the bottom of the frame. After moving to second on a sacrifice by Mo Ramsey, she then scored on a single to left center by Shelbey Miller.
In the top of the second, Jacksonville State (37-16) began the inning with five straight base runners including two double and two singles. Cadi Oliver, Whitney Gillespie and Jordan Bullock all drove in runs during the offensive outburst to give the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead.
Murray State then cut into the lead in the bottom of the third, after it began the inning with Becker reaching on a hit by pitch and Ramsey and Twaddle each coming up with singles. Miller then scored Becker for the second time in the game on a sacrifice fly, to pull the Racers within one at 3-2.
Maggie Glass once again came up big for MSU in the fifth, when she blasted her 15th home run of the season, to give her team a 5-3 lead. Twaddle and Miller were also on base during the blast after reaching on a fielder's choice and a double, respectively.
However, Sara Borders answered for JSU in the sixth, when she hit her 18th long ball of the season to cut the lead to 5-4. The Racers then shut down the Jax State offense and held on for the 5-4 win.
Miller was 2-for-2 in the game with a run and two RBIs, while Glass was 1-for-2 with a run, three RBIs and a walk. CheyAnne Gaskey became the first MSU pitcher to reach 20 wins in a single-season with the victory, as she tossed 4.2 relief innings and allowed just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Murray State now advances to the semi-finals where it will take on the winner of SIUE and Tennessee Tech Friday at 3 p.m.
