TTU Rallies Past Softball In OVC Semis
5/8/2015 11:59:00 PM | Softball
Tennessee Tech scored six unanswered runs, to come from behind and top the Murray State softball team, 6-4, in the semi-finals of the 2015 OVC Softball Championship Friday evening at Cougar Field in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Murray State (38-18) continued its hot hitting in the tournament in the first with a lead-off double by Alexa Becker, followed by a single from Mo Ramsey. Shelbey Miller got the Racers on the board in the next bat when she hit a long sacrifice fly to right field to score Becker from third.
Two batters later, Maggie Glass launched her third home run of the tournament to increase the Racers' lead to 3-0. Jocelynn Rodgers followed suit in the following a bat with a home run of her own, her fourth of the year, to make it 4-0 Murray State.
In the top of the second, the Golden Eagles (31-26) loaded up the bases for second straight inning, but it looked like the Racers would escape unscathed when Hannah Eldridge popped to shallow center field with two outs. However, a misplay by MSU allowed Tennessee Tech to runs score two runs, cutting the lead to 4-2, before a third was thrown out at home.
In the fifth, Olivia Bennett trimmed the deficit to just one at 4-3, when she led off the stanza with TTU's first home run of the game. Later in the inning, Angie Sakamoto would tie the game at four all with a single up the middle to score pinch runner Amity Brown from third. Two batters later, Eldridge struck again with double down the right field line to give the Golden Eagles a 6-4 lead. Neither team would score for the remainder game, to give TTU the win.
Becker and Ramsey led MSU in the contest by each going 2-for-3 with one run. Mason Robinson (15-6) took the loss for the Racers, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts over three full innings.
Murray State now awaits the winner of Saturday's first game between SIUE and Jacksonville State for an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. A win would send MSU to the finals against Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m., a win in that game would force an "if-necessary" game on Sunday at 10 a.m.
