Special Teams Looks To Shine Under Cooper
8/11/2015 7:56:00 PM | Football
Consensus 2014 kick return All-American Pokey Harris will be just one of several great weapons first-year special teams coordinator Brandon Cooper will have at his disposal as the Murray State football team continues to ready for the 2015 season.
Cooper comes to Murray after spending last season at Chattanooga, where he helped lead the Mocs to an appearance to the FCS quarterfinals. He is however, no stranger to the OVC, after graduating from UT Martin he served on the staffs of both the Skyhawks and Jacksonville State.
Harris made MSU history last season when he registered two 100-yard kick-off returns in back-to-back games, in addition to returning a third kickoff 75-yards for a touchdown. The senior will be joined as a return specialist by wide receiver Janawski Davis who ran back two punts for scores in 2014.
Adding to the special teams mix will be a pair of senior kickers in Carson Greifenkamp and Connor Mitchell and pair of freshmen punters in redshirt freshman Landon Stratton and true freshman Rhett Morrison. In addition, long snapper Wes Drewery transferred to Murray State in January after the UAB football program folded the month before.
All the pieces have seemed to fall in place for Cooper, who also serves as linebackers coach, just a couple weeks into the season. However, he knows the work is far from over and he expects things continue to change as position battles intensify.
Watch the videos below to hear more comments from both Cooper and Harris.
