Football Reignites Fight Song Tradition

When first-year head coach Mitch Stewart took over the reins of the Murray State football program, he noticed something was missing. Â Something most every college football team in American does after victories, something he did as a player at Valdosta State. He noticed that when Murray State wins, no one sings the fight song.
This year the tradition of singing the MSU fight song after victories will return to Stewart Stadium at long last. For years, however, the fight song was just that, a song with no words. In 1993, then head coach Houston Nutt changed that when he and his wife, Diana, penned the words to the song so his team could sing after wins.
Stewart has been working with his team, teaching them the song ever since he took over as head coach in January. Since then, the team has made significant progress and is now teaching others in preparation for the first home game on September 3. On Thursday, the team visited the sorority recruitment event at the CFSB Center to teach both current and potential members the song.

We will watch 'em take the ball down the field.
As we fight for our Alma Mater brave and bold,
We'll charge on to victory, our flag waving high!
March, men, march on down the field,
Place the ball o'er the line
For Thoroughbred's fame and old Murray's name
And everything that's right -- Fight! Fight!
