Summer Conditioning Paying Off For Football
8/6/2015 6:53:00 PM | Football
For the first time in recent memory, the Murray State football team took advantage of the NCAA rule allowing up to eight weeks of conditioning this summer. While the Racers did not utilize the entire two-month period, they did spend three weeks in July preparing for the 2015 season.
Over eighty members of the team, including freshman and newcomers reported for the intense, nearly month-long program. The jump-start in conditioning is not only already paying off, but it promises to be a building block that will last the whole season.
The voluntary program was paid for out-of-pocket by the players at a cost of around $350 per person providing a room and one meal per day. Outside of the one meal, players took advantage of the new nutrition bar in the weight room that provided further food for the day, as well as nutritional supplements. In addition to leading the program and all workouts, strength & conditioning Craig Sweiton was able to keep tabs on the nutrition of the all the players making sure they were not only putting the right foods into their bodies, but the right amount as well.
Hear head coach Mitch Stewart and Swieton talk further in the videos below about the program and what it has meant so far to the Racers.
