The Murray State football team got its first chance at a self-evaluation on Saturday, with the first scrimmage of fall camp. Friends, family and fans were also on hand to get their first look at the 2015 Racers.

The offense had several big plays on the afternoon and redshirt junior quarterback KD Humphries continued to show why he is working his name into the elite FCS quarterback conversation. One of the highlights of the day was Humphries 20-yard pass in to the end zone to newcomer Dominique Rhymes, a recent transfer from FIU. Humphries also connected with Janawski Davis and Pokey Harris for red zone scores on the day.
Paul Rice had possibly the longest play of the day when he went 70 yards on a pass from freshman quarterback Matthew Christian. Additionaly, Nick Taylor had two scores on the ground, one inside 10-yards and one in excess of 40 yards.
The red zone presented its share of problems on the day for each side of the ball, as the offense scored nearly every time it was within five yards of the goal. However, the defense did force some turnovers in the red zone including a sack and an interception.
Connor Greifenkamp and Connor Mitchell continued their kicking competition from the spring with another best-of-five "kick-off." Mitchell edged Greifenkamp, 4-3, in the competition, sealing the win with a 42-yarder.
The scrimmage ended with an end-of-game situation in which 1:30 was put on the clock and each side was give one time out. Just three plays into the drill, sophomore safety Toby Omli, a transfer from Butler CC, ended things early with an interception to send the defense home on a positive note.
The Racers will move into the second of three weeks of fall camp when they return to practice Monday.
