Softball Starts Fall With Two Wins
9/15/2015 6:17:00 PM | Softball
The Murray State softball team began its 2015 fall season with two wins last weekend at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois. The Racers began the day with 11-2 win over Lindenwood-Belleville and then followed that with a 7-3 win over host Southern Illinois.
There were plenty of positives to take away from game one against Lindenwood-Belleville including the fact that starting pitcher Mason Robinson did not allow any hits over four innings of work and struck out five. Reliever J.J. Francis had a good day as well, allowing just two runs on three hits over three innings to earn the save.
Offensively, Erica Howard led the way by going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a double. Shelbey Miller also had two hits on the day with a run and two RBIs. Jessica Twaddle was 2-for-3 in the game with a run, two RBIs, a triple and a double, while Maggie Glass drove in two runs of her own on the game's lone home run.
Against SIU, Murray State fell behind early in the contest but tied the game on a two-RBI single from Mallory Young in the second. The Racers then sealed the win in the fifth when sophomore Haven Campbell came up just feet short of a grand slam to drive in three runs on a double.
Twaddle led the Racers in game two by going 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run. In the circle, freshman Amber Van Duyse allowed just one earned run over a complete game performance with only one walk and five strikeouts.
The Racers will continue their fall season Sunday when they take on Kentucky Wesleyan in doubleheader action at Racer Field at 1 p.m.
