Racers Keep OVC First Place With 1-1 Draw At SIUE
10/16/2016 3:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Korte Stadium hosted a first place showdown between the Murray State Racers and SIUE Cougars Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois.
When the final seconds ticked away, the Racers (6-4-3, 5-0-2 OVC) earned a 1-1 draw to keep sole possession of first place in the Ohio Valley Conference with 17 points, with SIUE (7-5-3, 5-1-1 OVC) at 16 points.
It didn't take the Racers long to get on the scoreboard when they punched through only eight minutes into the match when Cori Cain settled a high pass to the middle from Taylor Richerson near the sideline. Cain used the left foot to score for the third time this season. It was Richerson's second assist.
With 12:42 to go before the half, Racer goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald made a diving save from the near post after an SIUE push to the end line to keep MSU in the lead.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Racers through halftime.
With 22:54 left Steigerwald had another good save on the fifth corner kick of the second half by SIUE.
However, SIUE's second half push paid off with 9:22 remaining when they tied the score on the first goal of the season by Lindsey Fencel.
Steigerwald made a pair of saves, one at the end of regulation time and another with 45-seconds left in the first overtime to push the game to a second overtime period. She faced seven shots on the day and made seven saves to keep the Racers in first place.
Murray State head coach Jeremy Groves was pleased to leave with solo possession of OVC first place after a hard-fought match at SIUE
"Yes, this was a tough game for us as both teams have it a good fight," Groves said. "We're very happy to come away from SIUE with a point. We battled hard in tough conditions against a good team who is undefeated at home. We had three great chances to win the game, but I'm happy we leave the weekend on the road still on top of the OVC and still unbeaten in league play."
The Racers come home this weekend to Cutchin Field for a pair of home games. They host Jacksonville State Friday (Oct. 21) at 3 p.m. and Sunday Belmont visits Murray for a 2 p.m. game. Both contests will be carried online at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
Game Notes
The Racers pushed their unbeaten streak in OVC regular season games to 18-straight with today's draw. MSU hasn't lost since Oct. 26, 2014 at home to Belmont 2-0.
In the Coach Jeremy Groves era, the Racers are 39-12-3 overall and 22-3-2 in OVC play.
In going for a fourth-straight shutout, the Racers had it spoiled when SIUE scored to tie it 1-1 with 19:22 left in regulation time. That meant the Racers' shutout streak reached 342:20 when it ended. The Racers hadn't given a goal since Oct. 2 at UT Martin.
Today was the Racers' fourth overtime game this season and they're now 0-1-3. MSU has tied in OT games at SIUE today, at SEMO 2-2 (Sept. 30) and at home against Arkansas State 1-1 (Sept 4). MSU lost in overtime at Saint Louis 1-0 (Sept. 20).
When the Racers meet the Gamecocks Friday, they'll lead the series with the Gamecocks 9-3-1 and have won the last seven of the last eight, with one tie since their last loss in 2007. Sunday when they meet Belmont, MSU trails in the all-time series 5-2, but won last season's meeting in Nashville 1-0.
The Racers are 4-0-1 at home this season.
The Sunday match will mark Racer Senior Day as the 2016 seniors play their final regular season home game at Cutchin Field. MSU's trio of Taylor Richerson (Murray, Ky.), Lyssie Wright (Murray, Ky.) and Ali Critcher (Edgewood, Ky.) have been excellent student-athletes during their time in the blue and gold. They'll be honored with their families at Cutchin Field before the 2 p.m. start.
