Senior tight end Jesse Blackburn and junior wide receiver Jordon Gandy were two of five Murray State players to earn 2016 OVC Football postseason honors, the league announced Tuesday morning.
Blackburn and Gandy were named as first-team All-OVC selections, while senior quarterback KD Humphries and junior defensive back D'Montre Wade were named to the second team. Junior defensive back Zachary Wade rounded out MSU's award winners by being named to the All-Newcomer team.
Blackburn hauled in 52 catches for 747 yards and three touchdowns in 2016. He logged three 100-plus yard games for the Racers and took part in the longest passing play in school history, an 87-yard heave from KD Humphries at Eastern Illinois. The Gardendale, Alabama native is now one of just seven MSU receiver to reach 2,000 career receiving yards, finishing his four-year stint in Murray with 2,105 on 168 receptions, the fourth highest total in school history. This is the second OVC honor for Blackburn, after being named to the second team last season.
Gandy had breakout season for Murray State, pulling down 62 catches for 976 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 976 yards is the eighth-highest single-season total in program history, while the 11 touchdowns is the fifth highest. The Athens, Alabama native racked up five games of at least 100 yards on the year, including a 218 yard outburst at Eastern Kentucky, the third highest single-game total ever by a Racer. Gandy led the OVC in receiving yards (976) and receiving yards per game (88.7), was third in receptions per game 5.6 and was second in the league and ninth nationally in receiving touchdowns at 11.
Despite missing one game due to injury, Humphries topped a stellar Murray State career with another solid season under center for the Racers. The Montgomery, Alabama native was 283-for-442 on the season for 3,116 yards and 23 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. His yardage total marks just the sixth time in program history a quarterback has passed for over 3,000 yards, a feat he has now accomplished thrice. Humphries led the OVC in completions per game (28.30), passing yards per game (311.16), passing yards (3,116), passing touchdowns (23), completion percentage and was third, fourth, sixth, 13th and 15th nationally in those respective categories. He leaves Murray State as its all-time leader in passing yards at 10,458, passing attempts at 1,458, completions at 940 and touchdowns at 73. Tuesday's announcement marks the second-straight All-OVC second team honor for Humphries.
D'Montre Wade earned the first All-OVC honor of his career in 2016 by leading the league and finishing third in the nation in passes defended per game at 1.6 with 15 pass breakups and three interceptions. The Columbia, Tennessee native finished his junior season in blue and gold with 50 tackles, 33 of which were solo, 1.0 tackle-for-loss and a blocked kick. Wade, along with Marquez Sanford, proved to be one of the most dangerous defensive back duos in the league as they combined for 27 total pass breakups and 30 total passes defended.
A transfer from Saddleback College, Zachary Wade made an immediate impact this season on defense for MSU by leading the team with 90 tackles. The native of Newport Beach, California led the league and was fourth in all of the FCS this season in fumbles recovered with three. Wade also broke up four passes on the year, came up with an interception and had 2.0 tackles-for-loss. His 9.0 tackles per game placed him fourth in the OVC this season and 34th nationally.
