Football Wins OVC Sportsmanship Award

Murray State has won the 2016 OVC Team Sportsmanship award for football, the league office announced Friday.
Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans.
"This is a great honor for our program," said head coach Mitch Stewart. "Whatever we do, one of our goals, is to do it with a lot of class and dignity. So to be recognized by other programs for doing just that is very special."
The 2016-17 school year marks the 12th year the team sportsmanship honors have been awarded. This marks the first award for the MSU football program.
The Racers are coming off a 4-5 season in which they doubled the amount of OVC wins from the previous season, winning four in 2016. MSU finished the season fifth in the OVC standings and following the season had four All-OVC selections and one OVC All-Newcomer selection.
