French Claims 2nd Championship At MSU

The Murray State men's golf team lost a final round lead and Preston French came from behind to take the medalist title from teammate Dustin Gosser in Sevierville, Tennessee.
The crazy final round was played out at the Sevierville Country Club where the Racers saw a 10-round lead slip away with a final round 304 as they were passed by Western Kentucky who shot a 291. WKU finished at 876 and the Racers at 879. Southern Illinois and Austin Peay tied for third place at 892
Gosser started the day with a six-shot lead on his senior teammate French. When the dust cleared, French had his second win at MSU with scores of 67-75-71=213, while Gosser fell to second place with scores of 69-67-79=215.
French's win was his first since a freshman season win at the MSU Invitational in 2013.
Other MSU scores and finishes included Matthew Zakutney in 27th place with scores of 76-73-78=227, while Brock Simmons placed 34th with rounds of 70-78-80=228. Duncan McCormick had scores of 78-80-76=234 to finish 54th.
Gabe Wheeler played the event for the Racers as an individual and had scores of 77-79-78=234 for a spot in 54th.
The rest of the top-10 teams were made up by Carson-Newman, host Tennessee Tech and Wright State all at 897 in fifth place. Oakland (899) was eighth with Jacksonville State (900), Samford (911), Evansville (923) and Tennessee State (926) rounding out the field. Â
The River Course played to a par of 72 and 6,972 yards.
The Racers stay on the road this week as they head to the Spring Break Invitational in Lake Worth, Florida. The 54-hole event is played March 25-26 at the Fountains Country Club and hosted by Florida Atlantic University.
