The Murray State softball team got the jump on Tennessee Tech in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Racer Field in Murray, but could not sustain its lead in either and fell, 3-1 and 9-7.
The Racers broke open the scoreless draw in the fifth inning of game one on a Cayla Levins' single that scored Brenna Finck from second to give MSU the 1-0 advantage. Finck led off the inning with what was her second bunt single of the contest.
Tennessee Tech, however, did not let the lead linger and immediately put together back-to-back- singles in the sixth with one out. The Golden Eagles would then draw two straight walks to load the bases and then tie the game at one. In the next at bat, Callen Griffin put TTU on top for good with a single that scored two runs to cap the scoring at 3-1.
Murray State got singles from Shelbey Miller and Cayla Levins in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score and fell, 3-1. Miller led MSU in the opener at 2-for-2 with a walks, while Levins was 2-for-4 with a RBI and Finck was 2-for-3 with a run.
Mason Robinson took the complete game loss for the Racers by allowing three runs on six hits with three walks, despite tying her career-high for strikeouts with nine.
In game two, MSU erupted for three runs in the second inning thanks to five hits and a Tennessee Tech error. One inning later, in the third, Jessica Twaddle made it 4-0 with her third home run of the season, a solo shot to left center.
However, over the next two innings, Tennessee Tech would go on to crank out seven hits, including a two-run home run of its own from Alyssa Richards, and take a 6-4 lead in the top of the fifth.
Murray State added one run in the fifth, on a sacrifice fly by Maggie Glass, to cut the lead to 6-5. Despite the run, the Golden Eagles answered in the top of the sixth with three more runs to push the lead to 9-5.
MSU added one run in the sixth, on a RBI single by Jocelynn Rodgers, and another in the seventh, on a solo home run by Glass, to cut the lead to 9-7 with just one out. Despite getting two runners on the base paths after the Glass home run, MSU could not convert and fell, 9-7.
Despite the loss, Murray State outhit the Golden Eagles, 16-13, in the game with every Racer in the starting lineup getting at least one hit. Miller once again led MSU by going 3-for-4 with a run and a walk, while Finck, Twaddle, Taylor Odom, Maddy Feeney and Leah Kesel tallied two hits each.
Haven Campbell received the loss for Murray State after she allowed five runs on six hits with no walks and a strikeout over four complete innings.
