2016 Spring Football Wrap: Linebackers

GoRacer.com continues to go position-by-position and look at the upcoming Racers team following spring practice, this time the linebackers take center stage.
Key Losses – T-Ray Malone was a crucial player for the Racers as he recorded over 140 tackles in his four years at Murray State with 78 of those tackles were unassisted. Malone also had two forced fumbles and recovered four fumbles. He also recorded 2.5 sacks for a loss of 17 yards. In the 2014 season, T-Ray had one interception in which he returned for 71 yards.
In Joey Cicoria's short career at Murray State, he recorded 115 tackles. Cicoria transferred from College of the Canyons before the 2014 season. In his first season with the Racers, he had a single interception where he returned the ball 36-yards and had just fewer than 30 tackles. However, in 2015, Cicoria really became a major player for the Racers and had 68 tackles, 25 which were unassisted and 1.5 sacks for a loss of 12-yards.
Key Returners – Lamont Crittendon is a redshirt-sophomore out of Decatur, Alabama. He has recorded 28 tackles in his two seasons with Murray State. With the departure of Malone and Ciccoria, Crittendon will look to compete for a starting role in the fall.Â
After leading MSU with 134 tackles in 2014, Jonathan Jackson was second on the team last year in the category with 79. He also added 7.0 tackle-for-loss for a total of 27 yards in addition to two hurries and a forced fumble.
Key Newcomers – Of the four incoming linebackers this season, one went through spring practice and that is Marico Paige. He transferred from Copiah Lincoln CC where he left with 69 total tackles and four sacks for a loss of 22 yards over two seasons. Paige helped lead the Wolfpack to a No. 1 national ranking for four weeks of the regular season in 2015. He finished the season with 43 solo tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. For his efforts, Paige was named second-team All-State by the MACJC.
