With spring practice in the books, GoRacers.com continues its in-depth look at the team with the defensive line as the next spotlight. Murray State stocked up this offseason on the defensive line position and added eight players at the always important position.
Key Returners – Bishop Woods, a junior, returns to help lead the defensive line after a breakout season in 2015. As a sophomore, he recorded 43 tackles, 19 of which were solo and 5.0 of which were for a loss of seven yards. He also a forced fumble, recovered one, hurried the quarterback five times and tallied 1.5 sacks for a loss of two yards.
After appearing in all 11 games for Murray State last season as freshmen, Rashad Johnson and Silas Owens will look to compete for increased roles this fall. As will seniors Thomas Chapman and Zuri Elrington, who played in six and seven games, respectively, after dealing with injuries last season.
Key Losses – After transferring from Iowa Central CC, Demetrius Mason became a mainstay on the Racer defensive line. He recorded 104 tackles on three seasons and left the Racers with 42 solo tackles, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, three blocked kicks and 3.5 sacks for a loss of 18 yards. Mason was recently invited to the rookie mini-camp by the Arizona Cardinals,
Zach Dean appeared in 45 games in his four years at Murray State and recorded 151 tackles, 81 of which were solo. Dean also racked up three blocked kicks, two fumble recoveries and 7.0 sacks for a loss of 38 yards.
Elijah Daniel spent just one season in Murray after transferring from Auburn. In 2015, Daniel racked up 32 tackles, 15 of which were solos, a block kick, a forced fumble and 3.5 sacks for a loss of 21 yards in his lone season with the Racers.
Key Newcomers – Of the eight newcomer, one was able to go through spring practice with the Racers and that was Dee Nalls. Nalls is a three-star rated recruit by major recruiting services from Fayette County HS in Alabama. While he played the offensive guard position in high school, Nalls is working on the transition to defensive line. He was ranked as one of the top 100 in the nation by Scout after helping the Tigers to a Class 4A title game appearance. After the season, Nalls was named first-team All-Class 4A selection by the Alabama Sportswriters Association.
