Racers Split With APSU, OVC Race Goes To Final Day
5/7/2016 5:41:00 PM | Softball
After shutting out Austin Peay, 6-0, in game one, the Lady Govs rallied to top the Murray State softball team, 8-2, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Cheryl Holt Field in Clarksville, Tennessee.
A win tomorrow would guarantee Murray State a spot in next week's OVC tournament. If the Racers fall Sunday, they could still get in with a Belmont loss. However, if the Bruins win and MSU loses, Belmont would take the final spot in the tournament.
Murray State (22-29, 11-14 OVC) was in full control of game one, as Mason Robinson (17-14) allowed just one hit in six innings for her third combined shutout of the season and eighth overall. Amber Van Duyse closed out the game for Murray State and allowed just one base runner on a walk in the final frame.
Five different Racers tallied two hits in the game with Cayla Levins leading the way at 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double, while Miller followed at 2-for-4 with a two runs, two RBIs and a walk. Jessica Twaddle, Erica Howard and Leah Kesel also came up with two hits in the contest.
In game two, Murray State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first by scoring on a misthrow and then a passed ball by Austin Peay (9-37, 5-21 OVC). However, Kacy Acree and Carly Matson answered for the Lady Govs by each belting a solo home run in the first and second, respectively, to tie the game at two.
From there, Austin Peay took control of the game and never let go, scoring six more runs for the 8-2 win. The Racers were able to scratch out five hits in the game, but the 10 runners left on base ultimately proved too costly for the Racers in the loss.
Van Duyse (0-6) took the loss for Murray State by allowing four runs on three hits in two innings. Haven Campbell began the game for MSU and gave up two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Robinson closed out the game and gave up two runs on three hits bringing her scoreless streak to an end at 34.2 innings. Kesel led Murray State offensively by going 2-for-3, while Miller, Brenna Finck and Odom also had hits.
The Racers will return to Cheryl Holt Field Sunday for the final game of the series at 12 p.m.
