MSU Invitational Begins Monday At Miller Memorial

The Murray State men's golf team opens the 2015-16 season at home Monday and Tuesday (Sep. 12-13) at the MSU Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.

2016 marks the 13^th playing of MSU's home event, where the Racers have won the championship nine times, including last year when they scored a 16-shot win over Tennessee Tech.

The 54-hole event starts Monday with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. Monday's play will be 36 holes with Tuesday having the final 18 holes in an 8:45 a.m. start.

The Racers are part of a field of nine schools which includes Bethel (TN), Evansville, Green Bay, Missouri Baptist, Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, UT-Martin and Western Illinois.

Murray State will field two teams in the event. The navy team features lone senior Matthew Zakutney and junior Daniel Taylor combining with a trio of freshmen, Avery Edwards, Austin Knight and Justin Wendling. MSU's gold squad is made up by 2015 All-OVC Newcomer pick Gabe Wheeler. The gold squad also includes Nick Choate (Jr.), Lance Davis (So.) and freshmen Matthew Winder and Cole Manion.

In 2015, Murray State's Brock Simmons tied Alabama State's Branson Ferrier for the title. Ferrier won in a play-off. Simmons had scores of 70-71-69=210. The tournament record by Tennessee Tech's Scott Stallings in 2006 still stands. Now a veteran of the PGA Tour, Stallings scorched the Miller Memorial course with scores of 68-63-66=197. Murray State's best individual performance came from Kyle Shirley in 2005 with rounds of 67-67-70=204 (9-under-par).

Miller Memorial Golf Course will play to a par-71 and 6,601 yards.
