Box Score (PDF)Â I Updated Stats
The Murray State Racers women's soccer squad dropped a 5-0 decision to the Kentucky Wildcats Sunday evening at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Kentucky.
Â
In the first half, Harriet Withers had a great chance in the 23rd minute, but was denied when the UK goalkeeper made a sliding save at the top of the box before the Racer junior could get a shot off. Less than two minutes later, UK had a shot on goal, but MSU's Alex Steigerwald made a save on the shot from 15 yards in front. In the 35th minute, the Racers managed to fight off two more UK shots, but couldn't in the 37th minute when UK's Kaitlin Miller scored the match's first goal with a header from a corner kick.
Â
The match stayed 1-0 through the half.
Â
Kentucky (3-3-1) blew the game open with three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Goals for Kentucky in the 52nd, 58th and 61st minutes put the Racers behind 4-0.
Â
The Racers had another scoring opportunity in the 73rd minute when Aaron Lankster made the UK keeper make a good save. Lankster had all three of MSU's shots on goal in the contest including the 86th minute.
Â
The Racers (1-3-1) get back to action at Saint Louis (Sept.20).
Â
MSU head coach Jeremy Groves offered his observation.
Â
"I thought the first half we battled and really competed hard," Groves said. "We created a great opportunity and were a little unlucky to not go up by a goal. The second half was totally different and we let them do what they wanted and it was very disappointing to concede four quick goals."
Â
Game Notes
Today's meeting between the Racers and Wildcats was the second since MSU started its program in 2000. The first meeting came 2001. UK won it 4-1 in Lexington.
Â
The game at Kentucky was a homecoming for two MSU players. Mazie Fry and Aaron Lankster are Lexington natives. The pair of Racer juniors each attended Tates Creek High School. Murray State head coach Jeremy Groves is a UK alum. He was a player at Kentucky and coached six seasons there as he split time with the men's and women's programs. Racer assistant coach Matthew Lodge is also a Kentucky alumnus.
Â
The Racers' next time out is at Saint Louis (Sept. 20), then they come home to Cutchin Field to face Morehead State in the Ohio Valley Conference opener (Sept. 25).
