The Murray State men's and women's cross country teams ran Saturday at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic. The men's 8K event and women's 5K event were contested in a place the Racers have competed at many times, Percy Warner State Park in the Nashville, Tennessee area.
The Commodore Classic is one of the biggest meets of the season in which the Racers went up against BCS schools including Georgia, Ohio State, Missouri, Louisville, Auburn and Tennessee.
The day marked very different conditions for the competitors that numbered 289 runners. The men's race was dry and hot, then a rain shower made an appearance and completely soaked the course and made the women's event a muddy, slippery affair.
In the women's race, Vallery Korir placed 29th overall with a time of 17:49, while Mason Swenson placed 71st with a time of 18:18. Both moved up on the MSU All-Time 5K List. Other personal best finishes for the Racers included: Ida Mutai (137th, 19:04), Maura Farrell (208th, 20:07) and Allison Burgen (228th, 20:38).
Overall, the Racers finished 15th in a field of 25 teams.
Head Coach Jenny Swieton said her squad had a fantastic day on the course.
"I am super proud of how everyone raced today," she said. "Our women endured a rain delay and still came back and ran faster than they did on the same course two weeks ago. It was really wet and muddy but they didn't let that stop them from having a good day."
