Cain Strikes Late To Give Racers Win In OVC Opener

After Morehead State equalized in the 86^th minute, Cori Cain scored the game-winner in the 88^th minute to give the Murray State women's soccer team a 3-2 win over Morehead State in Sunday's OVC opener at Cutchin Field in Murray.

The Racers (2-4-1, 1-0 OVC) were first on the board in the contest when Harriet Withers volleyed the ball past the Morehead State goalkeeper off a pass from Emma Heise on the wing to give the Racers a 1-0 lead in the 25^th minute. Almost four minutes later, MSU extended its lead to 2-0 after Taylor Richerson wrangled in the rebound on a shot by Withers and scored for her first goal of the season.

Murray State would take that 2-0 lead into the halftime and enjoyed the same margin for most of the second stanza. However, in the 82^nd minute the Eagles' Ashley Ritchie took a pass from Shelby Huddleston and zoomed it past the entire face of the goal until it clanged off the far goalpost and went in to cut the Murray State lead to 2-1.

Just over four minutes later, Samantha Damante fired a shot from close to the left touchline, between the top of the 18-yard box and the halfway line, into the far upper 90 of the goal to pull the two teams level with just over four minutes left in regulation.

However, in the 88^th, Withers was able to dribble past two Morehead State defenders and find Cain in front of the goal, who then fired it past the keeper for the eventual game-winner.

Despite allowing two goals, Kaylyn Telfair also had two saves to earn the win between the posts for the Racers, while Eva Ýr Helgadóttir took the loss after allowing three goals in addition to making nine saves.

Murray State will hit the road this weekend for a pair of OVC matches Friday at Southeast Missouri and Sunday at UT Martin. Friday's match in Cape Girardeau is slated for a 7 p.m. start, while kickoff in Martin Sunday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
