The Murray State soccer team posted their first tied match since 2013 when they faced the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Cutchin Field Sunday as the day ended with a 1-1 stalemate.

The Racers (1-2-1) have the coming week off and play Sunday (Sept. 11) at Kentucky.

The first half was a defensive battle. The Racers outshot the Red Wolves 7-5 but the game was still scoreless after the first 45 minutes.

That changed when Harriet Withers scored in the 47th minute on a goal assisted by Anna Richards, which was her first assist at MSU. Withers took eight shots with seven on goal and now has three goals this season.

Arkansas State (1-2-2) tied the score with a goal in the 77th minute.

The Racers escaped a bad situation that occurred in the 81st minute. After a Racer foul, ASU was given a penalty kick. Just when it looked like the Red Wolves were surely going to take the lead, Tayler Carter's PK attempt hit the left post and stayed out and the game was still tied 1-1.

With eight minutes left in the first overtime period, Withers had a good look at a possible game winner. However, her shot was tipped away and over the cross bar by ASU keeper Kelsey Ponder.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie, as MSU's Alex Steigerwald finished the game with seven saves. She has now accumulated 31 saves on the season and 88 career saves in 16 games.

This is the first time the Racers have gone into double overtime since a lost to SIUE 1-2 in 2014.

This is the first time this season the Racers have tied an opponent. It was also the first tie in the Groves era at MSU.

Murray State is 28-17-1 in the Coach Jeremy Groves era, including 17-3-1 at home and 11-12 on the road and 0-1 on neutral fields.

Congratulations to Coach Jeremy Groves and his wife Missy. This morning at 7:38 a.m. they welcomed their second child into the world when Missy gave birth to son Jackson Lee Groves. Little Jackson is a big boy weighing in at 9 pounds and 13 ounces! Missy and the baby are doing fine. Big brother Aiden (who is four years old) is very proud as well.

MSU will travel to Lexington next Sunday (Sept. 11) to play Kentucky. This is the third SEC opponent the Racers have faced this season. The match will be played at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. The Racers have only faced the Wildcats one other time in school history. The Racers lost 4-1 in 2001.

After a game at Saint Louis (Sept. 20), the Racers come back for the next home game against Morehead State for the Ohio Valley Conference opener on Sept. 25.
