Racers Carry Lead Into Final Round At APSU Intercollegiate

The Murray State men's golf team takes the lead into Tuesday's final round of the Austin Peay Intercollegiate at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee, the site of several past Ohio Valley Conference championships.

The Racers played a splendid 36 holes of competition Monday against the field of 11 teams and bested many teams from the OVC. Murray State carded scores of 292-287=579 and led second place UT Martin who had scores of 292-292=584 by five shots. Missouri State (586), Austin Peay (588) and Mercer (591) made up the top-5.

The Racers carded an amazing 1-under-par 287 in the afternoon round led by a 5-under-par 67 by Austin Knight. The Racer sophomore lefty posted scores of 73-67=140 and was in second place with 18 holes to play only one shot behind Auburn's Ryan Knop. Playing as an individual, Knop posted scores of 72-67=139. Knight's 67 was his best round as a Racer in relation to par.

Murray State's Austin Knight was in third place after scores of 69-74=143 to give the Racers a pair of players in the top-5 in the field of 75 competitors. Other Racer scores and places included Gabe Wheeler in 40th place on scores of 73-79=152 while Lance Davis and Connor Coombs who shared 47th place. Davis had scores of 77-77=154 and Coombs 85-69=154. Coombs, a freshman, enjoyed his lowest round in his young career at MSU.

Sixth place Samford had a score of 596, with Tennessee State (597), Belmont (603), Binghamton (604), Tennessee Tech (609) and Eastern Illinois (636) rounded out the field.

The course at GreyStone is playing to a par of 72 and at 7,000 yards. Greystone hosted the OVC men's championship in four consecutive seasons from 2010-13. The Racers' last OVC title was there in 2010.

Tuesday's final round is a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
