Racers Wrap-Up Highly Successful Fall Season

The Murray State softball team recently finished a perfect 8-0 run in their fall non-championship segment. Of the eight wins, four came against Division I competition and three came by way of shutout. Over the course of the eight-game mini-season, the Racers outscored their competition, 59-18 and batted .322 as a team.
"I was really pleased with how this fall went during our competition segment of the off-season." said head coach Kara Amundson. "With nine new players, we are a very different team than last year and it was great getting to see them continue to grow and mesh as a team throughout the fall. I was pleased with the level of competition played throughout the fall with half of our games being against Division I opponents. It gave us a chance to get a good glimpse of what the spring will entail. It also gave us a chance to see different people step up in different moments. Some games our pitching staff led the charge, some games our offense led the charge. I am looking forward to continuing to work and grow through the fall to keep building to become a championship team in the spring."
Murray State began its fall with wins over Southern Illinois and a shutout of Saint Louis as part of the Saluki Fall Round Robin, followed by a doubleheader sweep of Evansville. The Racers then finished out the fall with a pair of home twin bills against Dyersburg State and Olney Central.
Freshman Sierra Gilmore led the potent Murray State offense in the fall with a team-high .538 average after going 14-for-24 with four doubles, two triples and two home runs for eight RBIs and 13 runs. Junior Madison Culver followed Gilmore at .450, while classmate Brenna Finck turned in a .400 clip and junior transfer Lillie Goetz batted .357. Goetz drove in a team-high nine runs over the eight-game span, while Culver and Finck added eight and seven, respectively.
In the circle, the Racer staff posted a 1.75 ERA, while limiting the opposition to a batting average of just .187. Senor Haven Campbell went 4-0 in the fall with a 2.67 ERA over 21.0 innings to go along with 21 strikeouts compared to only three walks. Freshman Olivia Suski did not allow a single earned run over 16.0 innings while notching two wins of her own. Sophomore Ellison Barrett and junior transfer Grace Vaughn garnered the other two wins for MSU, with Vaughn picking up the lone save of the fall.
The Murray State softball team will officially begin its 2018 campaign next February when it travels to Statesboro, Georgia for Georgia Southern's 2018 Eagle Round Robin, Feb. 9-11.
