Racers Take Down Bryant In California Opener
3/18/2017 10:50:00 PM | Softball
The Murray State softball team posted a 9-2 win over Bryant to open its first of five games at the 2017 Matador Classic Saturday at the Matador Diamond in Northridge, California.
Murray State was first on the board in the game in the fourth with a leadoff home run from Jessica Twaddle. After a single later in the inning by Jocelynn Rodgers, her pinch runner, Leah Kesel, was scored from second on a double by Maggie Glass to make it 2-0 Murray State.
Bryant, however, answered in the bottom of the inning by capitalizing on a pair of Racer miscues. The Bulldogs first cut the deficit in half on a wild pitch that scored Nicole Davis after they loaded up the bases on a hit by pitch, a walk and a single. Later in the frame, Rachel Monroe tied the game at two when she scored on an error during Nicole Zukowski's at bat.
The runs by Bryant did not rattle the Racers, though, as they answered with three more in the fifth and four in the seventh to pick up the 9-2 win. The win is the 12th consecutive for Murray State and it pushes the Racers' overall record 23-4 on the year.
Eight of nine starters for Murray State combined for 13 hits in the contest, five of which went through the left infield gap. Kaylee Ranburger led MSU at the play by going a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and walk, while Jocelynn Rodgers was 2-for-4 with a run. Maggie Glass was 2-for-3 Saturday with a run, two RBIs, two doubles and a walk, while Cayla Levins was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Mason Robinson moved to 15-2 on the year with the win in the circle by allowing just one earned run on only two hits with two strikeouts and a walk over a full seven innings of work.
Murray State returns to action Sunday in the Matador Classic with an 8:00 a.m. PT matchup with Weber State, followed by a 1 p.m. PT showdown with Quinnipiac.
