First Pitch
The Racers come home to Reagan Field for their only home contest over an eight-game stretch. MSU is coming off a 0-3 weekend at No. 3 ranked TCU. The Hornets are coming off a 2-1 weekend against conference foe William Woods. The Racers return to OVC play this weekend at Tennessee Tech.Â
Inside the Matchup
This will be just the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The Racers defeated HSSU in an early-season matchup in 2016, 13-4. Adam Bauer went 2-for-3 with a game-high four RBIs in the win at Reagan Field last year.Â
Hits King
With his first inning RBI single Sunday at TCU, Tyler Lawrence recorded his 238th career base knock, passing Wes Cunningham (2007-10) for first on the all-time career hits list in program history. Lawrence also passed Cunningham earlier this season back in March for the most RBIs in MSU history.Â
Climbing the All-Time Ranks
In addition to being first all time in hits and RBIs, Lawrence has already reached or will reach the all-time top-10 lists in program history in most other offensive categories. Lawrence is also tied for first with 55 career doubles and is second in total bases (385) and at-bats (743). He also ranks fourth all-time with 112 walks and seventh in runs with 146. His 194 games played ranks just outside the top 10 all time.Â
Scouting Harris-Stowe State
The Hornets are led by Dylan Yankle's .456 batting average, which also ranks 12th nationally in the NAIA. Yankle also leads HSSU with six home runs and 19 extra-base hits and is second on the team with 35 RBIs. Leobardo Saldivar leads the Hornets with 36 ribbies this season while Arsalaan Alvi has a team-best 39 runs scored in 2017. As a team, the Hornets rank sixth nationally with a .354 batting average and are averaging over 11 runs per game. HSSU is also 95-of-125 on stolen base attempts this season.
Dion Herron leads the Hornets with a perfect 5-0 record in 2017 while Tyler Boles leads the team with 16 appearances and three saves this season. Stephen Wells leads the squad with 49.2 innings of work on the year and is tied with Jordan Dreibelbis with a team-high 37 strikeouts. The Hornets have a team ERA of 5.33 and are led by second-year head coach CJ Bilbrey.
