Who's New?
J.R. Burns joins the Racers after spending two years at Northwest Mississippi CC. Burns is a 6-2, 295 offensive lineman out of Corinth, Mississippi. While playing for the Rangers of Northwest Mississippi CC, Burns was named a preseason All-American by College Football America prior to the 2016 football season and named a second-team All-MACJC selection after. Burns helped the team win a national title in 2015 and had a sixth-place finish nationally this past season. Northwest Mississippi CC averaged 340.5 yards and 30.1 points per game in 2016.
Who's Back?
Senior Joe Irby started each of the nine games he played in the 2016 season. The Nashville native has 24 total starts during his three years at Murray State. Irby said, "We are looking well and we are getting to trust each other more and more. We are learning how to protect the quarterback and get more yards for the running back."
Junior Chris White graduated high school early and enrolled at MSU in January 2014. White has appeared in 21 games while at MSU. White said, "I feel like we are working in the right direction. Everything is looking pretty good since last season."
The Racers' have many returning offensive lineman this spring. Ryan Rainey, Kwan Stallworth, Brant Newman and Ingram Tillard all return. The Racers averaged 381.2 yards and 26 points per game in the 2016 season.
Irby added, "As a unit, we needed to lose some weight over the offseason and we got that done."
Offensive Line coach Brian Hamilton said, "They are all giving their best efforts to learn how to do it my way. It is important that we all understand that the ship is only going to go if we are all rowing in the same direction at the same time."
Who's in Charge?
The Murray State Racers recently announced the addition of Brian Hamilton who was previously at Cal. During his last three seasons as the offensive quality control coach at Cal, Hamilton worked with both Davis Webb and current Los Angeles Rams' quarterback Jared Goff.
Before helping the Golden Bears of Cal, he spent 11 years at Concord High School in California as the head coach. Hamilton led the Minutemen to three North Coast Section title game appearances and a championship in 2010.
As a player, Hamilton played two seasons at SUNY Cortland before he graduated in 2000 after beginning his career at Pasadena City College.
Hamilton concluded with, "I am really grateful to work for coach Stewart because he reminds me everyday to be positive, to be patient, and to be a teacher." Hamilton continued, "He has a great culture and has built something really cool here. I am really excited to be a part of it."
