Spring Football: First Scrimmage

The Murray State football team held its first scrimmage of the spring of 2017 Friday at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray. The scrimmage was mainly dominated by the defense.Â
Head coach Mitch Stewart said, "We got a lot of reps in today and had the officials out here. We cleaned up things from a technique stand point."
Stewart added that the offensive is taking it elementary this spring and really focusing on the language and the techniques. In contrast, since the defense did not lose many players this offseason, it can build on its 2016 successes.Â
Defensive end Kenney Wooten joined the Racers in January from Itawamba CC. Friday, he showed the MSU coaching staff why he can be the next big pass rusher for the Racer D.Â
Wooten said, "It is a lot more work than my junior college, but I feel like they are only doing this to help me get better and be a better player on the field."
Stewart added, "The defense was really physical and I thought they ran around and smacked the ball really well. They had some really good tackles and could get in and out of fronts really well."
The entire team worked hard throughout the scrimmage and got a lot of practice in different situations. The offense tried different scenarios and worked on their techniques before adding any difficulty into the plays.Â
The Racers will scrimmage again next Friday,  April 21, an event that will once again be open to the public.
