Who's New?
Shuler Bentley is a redshirt junior who recently spent three years at Old Dominion. The Duncan, South Carolina native went 144-for-279 for 1,498 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Bentley was a four-star rated recruit by 247Sports, a two-time South Caroline Gatorade Player of the Year at Byrnes High School.
Preston Rice comes to MSU from Wayne County High School after graduating early in December. Rice was a two time finalist and the 2016 winner of the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Class 1A Back award. The Waynesboro, Tennessee native led his team to a 13-1 record this past fall where he threw for 3,075 yards and 37 touchdowns and rushed for over 730 yards with 16 touchdowns. Rice finished his career with over 10,000 yards passing and is currently the TSSAA record holder for career passing/rushing touchdowns with 141 (93 passing, 48 rushing).

Who's Back?
Cameron Birse appeared in two games for the Racers in 2016. Birse was 17-for-32 for 228 yards one touchdown and two interceptions. Before coming to MSU, he was a three-year member of the Arkansas State roster. Birse said that this offseason he has been working on getting in better shape and getting to know his teammates on a more personal level.
Birse stated, "It has been more of a physical thing for me, just slimming down a little bit and working on my footwork as it can always be an improvement of mine. Sometimes I tend to get lazy with that so it is something I have really been trying to work on this offseason."
Newly promoted quarterbacks coach Carson Hunter said, "Cameron Birse is a big time guy who is taking a lot of challenges head on this spring. He's getting all of his ducks in a row to prove that he can take care of everything from the time he gets up to the time he goes to bed."
 Brendan Bognar is a redshirt sophomore who transferred to MSU last season from Lindenwood (MO). He threw for 2,987 passing yards and had 38 touchdowns his senior season at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis, Missouri. He capped off his senior season by being named as a first-team all-conference and first-team all-district selection.
Hunter said, "He is the guy in whom I am the most familiar with. He is a very bright kid and a very football savvy guy who has a great arm. He has worked hard this offseason to develop his physical abilities to get his feet and athletic ability to match his arm."
Lastly is Eli Oltean who spent the 2016 season as a redshirt. The St. Joseph, Illinois native was a key member of the St. Joseph-Ogden High School 2015 undefeated season that had a run to the state semi-finals. Through three seasons at St. Joseph-Ogden, Oltean was 223-for-404 for 3,444 yards and 45 touchdowns. Following his senior season, he was named second-team all-area honors and first-team all-conference.
 Hunter said of Oltean's redshirt season, "He really got to learn and develop a great deal."

Who's Gone?
KD Humphries appeared in 38 games while at Murray State where he was 940-for-1458 with 10,458 yards and 73 touchdowns. Humphries averaged 275.2 passing yards per game. He rushed for over 284 yards as well throughout his four years playing at MSU.
To fill KD Humphries will be a group effort according to Hunter. "They will have to push each other to do their absolute best and to stand out among them."

Carson Hunter starts his second season with the Racers as he moves from defensive quality control to quarterbacks coach. Last season he assisted with the linebackers and all defensive scouting. Â Before joining the Racers, Hunter was head coach and dean of students at Rossville Academy in Tennessee.
Cameron Birse said, "He really cares about us more so as people than anything else. We had a firm emphasis on improving and growing as people before we got into any x's and o's. He is very intelligent and very sharp. He's got great energy and very consistent. You know what you're going to get from him and he's going to squeeze every last ounce of juice out of you."
