Racers Take Field For First Scrimmage

The sounds of pads and helmets filled Roy Stewart Stadium Tuesday as the Murray State football held its first scrimmage of 2017.
The scrimmage put the Racers in several different situations with each unit getting between 30 and 40 plays. While each series started at a specific point in the field, head coach Mitch Stewart said he likes to do things a little different. "In our situational scrimmages, we aren't locked into a script. I want to see how things develop organically and how the players respond without necessarily knowing what's coming."
Both the offense and defense had their individual successes at time, however with the high-level of energy emanating from both sidelines observers could tell that everyone was excited to be running live plays. Stewart said he saw a lot of good things from the three running backs that participated in the scrimmage, Nolan Nichols, D.J. Penick and Kyree Hawkins, especially given the fact that Penick and Hawkins are true freshman.
Despite liking what he saw on Tuesday, Stewart knows the team's job of getting ready for its August 31 opener is far from over. "We are nowhere near where we need to be yet, but we have come a long way in just a week," said Stewart.
Stewart will get his next chance to evaluate his team's talent in a game environment Saturday, when the Racers take the field for their second scrimmage of fall camp.
