Harriet Withers Sets New Scoring Record - Racers Beat SEMO 1-0
9/28/2017 6:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Harriet Withers is now the Murray State soccer career leader in goals, as she scored the 35th of her career, to give the Racers a 1-0 win over Southeast Missouri at Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky. The Racers improve to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference and will take on UT Martin this Sunday, October 1 at 3 p.m. Southeast Missouri falls to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the OVC.
"I thought we were unlucky not to win by more, it's always those games that missed chances come back to bite you, so I'm happy we came away with the shutout," said head coach Jeremy Groves
The Racers, hot off their 3-0 win at Jacksonville State last Sunday, were looking to find the back of the net early and often, with the first three shots of the game for Murray State all narrowly missing or hitting off a post.
Withers was able to corral a deflection and curl her shot over the keeper and into the top right portion of the net, eerily similar to how she scored in overtime against Little Rock earlier this year.
"We seem to be missing the easy ones and scoring the hard ones this year," commented Groves
Murray State continued to attack, but were unable to get anything else past SEMO. In total, the Racers finished with 17 shots and five on target.
Alex Steigerwald made three saves for her third straight shutout. This marks her fifth shutout of the season and 16th of her career. She is now 8-1-1 on the year.
