Steigerwald Sets New Record For Most Shutouts - Racers Best Morehead 2-0

Senior goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald etched her name atop the Murray State record books once again after improving her MSU career shutout total to 26Â in Murray State's 2-0 victory over Morehead State at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.Â
"This was one of those games where I needed people to step up, and I think that every person I put on the field did their job, and did their job well," said head coach Matt Lodge. "Alex [Steigerwald] has been a staple for our program for the last four years. She has deserved it."
Steigerwald has proved to be a record breaker during her exceptional career for the Racers, as the goalkeeper accounts for six MSU records thus far. The West Chester, Ohio, native also broke the record for starts in goal today with a total 60 over her four-year career. Steigerwald is also on pace to break the MSU Saves record as well. Today, she earned her 292nd career save, placing her one shy of Tara Isbell (2007-10) who made 293 saves.Â
"The biggest factor every year has been the defense that we have had," said Steigerwald of the MSU defense. "Every year consistently we have had a really strong back line. Since I have been a freshman, it has been about the upperclassmen teaching the underclassmen. They have really helped me in achieving [the record]."Â
With help from a tenacious defense, the Racers (11-3-1, 7-2) appeared to control much of the tempo in the first stanza, as they outshot the Eagles 12 shots to two. Murray State was able to jump ahead to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Rebecca Kubin controlled a deflected ball off a Morehead State defender and drilled a shot past the goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the season.Â
Murray State saw their second score of the night from a familiar source, as Abby Jones found Rebecca Kubin yet again at the 52:15 mark. Kubin maneuvered her way through the Morehead State back line to set herself up for an open shot for the Racers final score of the contest.Â
The Racers will be back in action Sunday to take on Eastern Kentucky at Cutchin Field, as Murray State looks to honor five seniors in their regular-season finale at 1 p.m.Â
