The Murray State rifle team topped Ohio State Saturday at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia, but was edged by the host Mountaineers. Murray State scored a 4679, while West Virginia shot at 4683 and the Buckeyes fired a 4650. The match was held on a mobile range in the coliseum in advance of the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championship.
"I thought we competed well," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "The range was a little different and I think it posed some challenges for all three teams. Everyone worked hard and competed well. We were in it to the end and that's about all you can ask. It was a good match with great competition. We did some growing this weekend. Now we have two weeks to train and get ready for JSU."
Barbara Schläpfer led all shooters in the match with an 1181 aggregate that included a 587 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle. Shelby Huber followed in the match with an 1169, while MacKenzie Martin had an 1166.
Schläpfer shot a team-high 587 in smallbore with Martin following at 581. In air rifle, Schläpfer led the Racers with a 594, while both Huber and Kelcy McGrath had a 592.
Murray State will now have two week off before hosting Jacksonville State Nov. 3, followed by UT Martin on Nov. 4.
