Dr. Hussung Honored With OVC Thurston Banks Award

Dr. Karl Hussung who worked for 29 years on Murray State and Ohio Valley Conference student-athlete affairs has been named to the league's Thurston Banks Award for 2018.

Established in 2013, the award goes to individuals (academic advisor, professor, tutor, etc.), with at least five years of service at one or more OVC member institutions, for his or her outstanding contributions to OVC student-athletes' academic success, learning and development as well for his or her overall commitment to the institution's athletics program.

Hussung's belief in the value of collegiate athletics goes back to the late 1960's when he began a run of 29 years as the Faculty Athletics Representative to the OVC and the NCAA for Murray State University.

Hussung chaired Murray State Athletic Scholarship Committee which included signing all athletic scholarships and he was in charge of monitoring satisfactory progress towards graduation for all student-athletes at MSU. He also chaired Intercollegiate Athletic Council for 16 years.

Karl was also involved on the search committees for hiring Murray State several combined Director of Athletics and head coaches.

Hussung enrolled at Murray State in 1949 and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. A student-athlete himself, Karl was a member of the Murray State basketball team. He attended the University of Louisville from 1953-1957 receiving the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Chemistry.

Dr. Hussung was a Murray State faculty member from September 1957 until January 2000. He served for 39 and half years as a professor in the Murray State chemistry department. He was recognized by the Murray State Alumni Association as the 1971 MSU Distinguished Professor.
Dr. Hussung was the first to be inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in the area of Hall of Distinction in 2000.

The award is named after Dr. Thurston Banks, who served the Tennessee Tech Department of Athletics for 31 of his 34 years on the faculty and served as the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) for 25 years before stepping down in 2006. He was inducted into the OVC Hall of Fame in 2007.
